A new genus for the eastern dwarf galagos (Primates: Galagidae).

2017

13 pages; International audience; The family Galagidae (African galagos or bushbabies) comprises five genera: EuoticusGray, 1872; GalagoGeoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1796; GalagoidesSmith, 1833; OtolemurCoquerel, 1859; and SciurocheirusGray, 1872, none of which is regarded as monotypic, but some (Euoticus and Otolemur) certainly qualify as oligotypic. We argue for the recognition of a sixth genus, if the taxonomy is to reflect galagid evolution accurately. Genetic evidence has consistently demonstrated that the taxa currently referred to the genus Galagoides are not monophyletic but form two clades (a western and an eastern clade) that do not share an exclusive common ancestor; we review 20 years…

La vocalidad del violín en el norte de Italia en torno a 1600

2021

Throughout the present research I intend to demonstrate the powerful link between the vocal practice in accompanied monody and the way Early Italian violin music ought to be interpreted. Due to the scarce amount of articulation and ornamentation in this music, I consider that historical criteria should be found in order to back up the subjective choices in its performance. According to this, I focus on reviewing sources that describe the vocal practice around 1600, but also contemporary sources in which we can find instructions addressed to bow instruments. Besides, a catalogue of articulations and ornamentations present in early editions of printed violin music is attached. Last, I comment…

The Structure and Usage of Female and Male Mouse Ultrasonic Vocalizations Reveal only Minor Differences

2012

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) of mice are increasingly recognized as informative dependent variables in studies using mouse models of human diseases. While pup vocalizations primarily serve to re-establish contact with the mother, adult male ‘‘songs’’ were considered to be courtship signals. Alternatively, mouse USVs may generally function as territorial signals. To distinguish between these two hypotheses, we compared the structure and usage of adult male and female USVs in staged resident-intruder encounters. If calls function primarily as courtship signals, males should respond stronger than females, specifically when presented with a female intruder. Refuting this hypothesis, we found …

Prenatal exposure to the CB1 receptor agonist WIN 55,212-2 causes learning disruption associated with impaired cortical NMDA receptor function and em…

2005

The aim of this study was to investigate whether prenatal exposure to the cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist WIN 55,212-2 (WIN) at a daily dose devoid of overt signs of toxicity and/or gross malformations (0.5 mg/kg, gestation days 5-20), influences cortical glutamatergic neurotransmission, learning and emotional reactivity in rat offspring. Basal and K+-evoked extracellular glutamate levels were significantly lower in cortical cell cultures obtained from pups exposed to WIN during gestation with respect to those measured in cultures obtained from neonates born from vehicle-treated dams. The addition of NMDA to cortical cell cultures from neonates born from vehicle-treated dams concentration-…

Use of ultrasonic vocalizations to assess olfactory detection in mouse pups treated with 3-methylindole.

2005

International audience; Altricial mammals use olfaction long before the olfactory bulb has reached its anatomically mature state. Indeed, while audition and vision are still not functional, the olfactory system of newborn animals can clearly process distinct odorant molecules. Although several previous studies have emphasized the important role that olfaction plays in early critical functions, it has been difficult to develop a sensitive and reliable test to precisely quantify olfactory ability in pups. One difficulty in determining early sensory capabilities is the rather limited behavioral repertory of neonates. The present study examines the use of ultrasonic vocalizations emitted by iso…

L'excursus fonologico del Teeteto e la testualità platonica. A che cosa pensiamo quando parliamo di 'elementi' e 'sillabe'?

2010

The ''theory of the dream'' discussed in the final section of the Theaetetus is based on a proportion: stoicheion is to syllabé as onoma is to logos. The four terms indicate the simple and the complex in the two components, phonic and semantic, of language. More specifically, logos does not mean ''reason'', stoicheion does not mean ''letter'' and syllabé does not only mean ''syllable''. Logos does not mean ''reason''. In the final part of Theaetetus, logos is associated with ''lego'' (''to say''), and opposed to onoma (''name'', ''word''). In this context, logos thus means ''discourse'', ''speech''; and hence ''statement'' and ''definition''. Syllabé does not only mean ''syllable''. Derivin…

Variació foneticofonològica. Una aproximació a la diversitat del vocalisme en lleidatà

1998

This paper presents phonetic-phonological variation in articulatory and perceptual terms, both at segmental and suprasegmental levels. It also presents the determining factors of linguistic diversity and change, that is, the factors responsible for the external, geographical (intra-dialectal and inter-dialectal), chronolectal, social and functional variation of a language. Several examples of a few relevant phenomena of the Northwestern phonetics in Lleida are included, especially the phenomenon of vocalism as seen from the relation between internal and external variation of a language.
